Dal Tragedies in Our Own Backyard

For the most recent updates, please scroll down.

We continue to find case after case of starved Dalmatians in numerous shelters around the central Florida area.

This poor girl is "Lady" who was found in a field. No doubt she had been without food for quite sometime. The photos actually make her look alot better - in person she is 43 lbs. and should be 60 - nothing but skin and bones. Her skin is raw from flea bites and she has Class II heartworms. She was bred several times before being discarded. So why save her with all these problems? Because she is only 4 years old and we feel she deserves a chance to know that all humans aren't bad. And she's special with a blue and brown eye!

It will be a long road back to health but Lady is in good hands with Foster Mom Sherry. We also want to thank Marilyn H., husband Bruce, and Chris C. for transporting her to safety. Thanks also to Lynn A. who is always ready to go to Polk Co. Animal Control to check on the abandoned Dals.

Lady is showing lots of improvement according to Foster Mom Sherry. She is eating like there is no tomorrow and already putting on alot of weight. Her severe ear infection is clearing up and she got a good bath to help get rid of the flea dirt. She did come down with a bad case of kennel cough but has been on a round of antibiotics to prevent any possible side effects. She is meeting lots of new people on her daily walks who stop to say hello and pet her on the head. Thankfully she is one of the lucky ones who we know will recover in full.

When Lady was first picked up and transported away from Polk County Animal Services (thanks to volunteers Marilyn, husband Bruce & Chris), she was a mess. Flea bitten and almost hairless, bone thin with all her ribs showing, a fresh scar from a chain around her neck and a bad case of heartworms.

Last night on December 10th, Lady spent for what probably was the first time in her entire life, the night sleeping in bed with her new guardian Randy. Randy called us after his last Dalmatian passed away and was looking to help another. He has waited patiently for the past two months for Lady to get well.

And what a beautiful blue-eyed girl she has turned out to be! We hope the two will spend many happy days and nights together from here on out. Special hugs again to Foster Coordinator Sherry for taking Lady safely through her long journey to a happy ending.
