Our Putnam Dal...

A New Hope, a New Beginning

Posted August 3rd, 2005

Thursday we are going to pick up from Putnam County this very emaciated 3-5 year old male Dalmatian. The volunteers up there tell me he looks like he is starving to death. But despite that, he appears to be a gentle soul. He shows no hostility towards humans even though it was a human who neglected to give him any food. We are almost certain in addition to a severe skin condition that he will have heartworms. But we are hopeful that it can all be fixed and that he will have a future.

If you can, please send even a small donation to help with his care. Pulling together, we can help him.

A note to Susan from Webmaster Rich:
A donation of $100.00 has just been made for the Putnam County Pup in honor of the seven astronauts flying high overhead aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. Earlier today they were "spotted" at the International Space Station! DRTB wishes Discovery and Crew a safe journey home!

We also want to thank Ilyse R. for donating to help the Putnam Dal. Your gift is very much appreciated.

This poor little dog was in worse shape than I imagined when I picked him up today. His skin is raw from being covered with ticks, fleas and ants. He has three deep scare rings around his neck, some of which are freshly scabbed over. They say it looks like he might have been tied up with a metal snare. He is about 15 pounds underweight. In the condition he is in, they said he would probably have only lasted 3-4 more weeks had he not been brought in. He is absolutely famished and devours anything put in front of him. For now that will have to be special food and vitamins. (not the chicken nuggets I bought for him on the way back because I felt so sorry for him.)

Thanks to a nice "cat woman" named Sherry who drove the sad dog to meet me in Ocala. She braved her normal fear of dogs to help him out and was so happy to see him being saved. Thanks again to Chris who came up and transported him to our vet in Tampa so he could get immediate care. And thanks to our webmaster Rich for donating so generously for his care.

Again we begin a road to recovery and will make sure that at least this one won't live like this ever again.

After having two tick & flea baths, little Putnam's skin is looking somewhat better. He weighs only 37 pounds but should be about 55. He has Class II heartworms, hookworms and coccidia. The deep wounds around his neck will eventually heal but he will always have visible scars. We're all pretty surprised at how good his temperament is considering what he has gone through....dogs are amazingly forgiving!

PUTNAM GETS A LOVE LETTER

We'd like to give a big thank you to all the people who stepped forward to help little Putnam's life begin to get a whole lot better. Putnam is having so much fun being a house dog. He is fasinated by toys, the printer printing, the toilet flushing (yes he follows everywhere like a typical Dal) and every other new thing he is discovering. He is so excited about everything that even as hungry as he is he stops eating to run around and check out what all the other dogs are getting too.

Putnam would like to thank Little Miss Dottie R. who wrote him the following love letter:
"Hi Susan, My Mommy was writing out the bills and got up for a glass of tea. I found a blank check that was signed and thought you could use it to help putt-putt (Putnam Dal). I saw his picture when Daddy was on the internet. Being someone was so nice to help me in my time of need, before going home, I felt I should do the same.

(Dottie is the very pretty little 7.5 year old deaf Dalmatian who was recently placed and is now as happy as can be in her new home)

Thanks to Lauren and Dals Chili and Ivan from Maine for helping with Putnam's rehabilitation costs.

Putnam would also like to thank Lee of Spotted Dog Real Estate, Joann B. of Brandon. We'd also like to thank Natalya and Paul R. who sent a donation in Memory of sweet Howie who we recently lost to a heart attack while undergoing heartworm treatment. We will use this to help Putnam and spotted others who are following right behind him.

Here's a photo of Putt-Putt and big brother Bailey who he thinks is his spotted daddy. He just loves him. They are together constantly!

DRTB sends puppy mooches and thanks to Carole Brown, Tara and Doug Bravata, and Jennifer Triana for adding their names to the growing list of those donating for Putt-Putt's welfare.

PUTNAM COUNTY DAL GETS JOB ON ORCAS

Sometimes the Dals we pull out of shelters don't always make it to a home of their own for one reason or another. Like "Putnam" - the little Dal who appeared to have been terribly mistreated at the hands of some human. After months of rehabilitating, we found that little Putnam suffers from fear aggression and feel that it would be a potential liability to place him in a home. But please don't feel too sorry for him.....Putnam is living a good life at the Spotted Rescue Ranch on Orcas Island and will remain in our care forever. He even applied for a job with his Dad but they said he was too young. Oh well.....if only we could get these guys to earn a living just by being cute we would have a fortune.
